Welcome to Central Elementary School’s website! We’re glad you decided to check us out! Opened in 1878, Central is the oldest school in Longmont and the St. Vrain Valley School District.  The setting in the historic west side neighborhood of Longmont across from Thompson Park adds to the stateliness and beauty of the school and community.

Central Elementary is presently undergoing an exciting and dramatic transformation into a preschool through 5th grade International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme.  The staff, parents, and community are committed to providing our children with a 21st Century education that focuses on an inquiry-based approach to learning and giving them the tools to be successful and productive citizens who maintain a life-long passion for learning and new experiences in a global society.

Central Elementary is a unique school with a rich history of academic excellence.  Though the community has changed over the past 130 years, the commitment of the staff to educational excellence has remained constant.  We invite you and your children to become a part of our enduring legacy of learning.

Jim Hecocks, Principal

Watch us as we transform into an
IB Primary Years Programme School!

Central Elementary School is currently in the last phase of the candidate school process of our implementation of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB-PYP). This is a very BIG year for us! Our authorization visit is scheduled for December 8th and 9th 2011. We anticipate hearing about being granted authorization within three months or so from our visit. When we are authorized, we will officially become an IB World School.

Each grade level has now written six units of inquiry. Each unit of inquiry falls under one of six transdisciplinary themes that are used PreK-5th grade. We now have a complete Program of Inquiry! We have a Programme of Inquiry “Quilt” hanging across from the main office, please stop in and take a look! Our hope is that this quilt will keep our community informed and in the loop. You can also view the complete program of inquiry by clicking on the link below this update. In addition to our program of inquiry quilt we also have an “IB Action Board” located right when you walk through the main entrance. If your child takes his/her learning and translates that learning into action, we’d love to honor your child and hear from you! There are blank certificates on the action bulletin board for you to use at any time. Action can be anything from creating a shelter at home using popsicle sticks (Kindergarten, Shelter UOI) to raising money for those in need of clean water (5th grade, Water UOI). This is a very exciting year for us. If you have any questions or concerns or ways you’d like to be involved, please contact me.
