Important: Change in Bilingual Programming at Central for 2012-13

Welcome to the website of Central Elementary School! We’re glad you decided to check us out! Opened in 1878, Central is the oldest school in Longmont and the St. Vrain Valley School District. The setting in the historic west side neighborhood of Longmont across from Thompson Park adds to the stateliness and beauty of the school and community.

Central Elementary has undergone an exciting and dramatic transformation into a preschool through 5th grade International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. We are excited that we are able to offer our students this incredibly rich curriculum that focuses on inquiry, international-mindedness, celebration of diversity, and taking action with their learning. The staff, parents, and community are committed to providing our children with a 21st century education that gives them the tools to be successful and productive citizens who maintain a life-long passion for learning and new experiences in a global society.

Central Elementary is a unique school with a rich history of academic excellence. Though the community has grown and changed over the past 133 years, the commitment of the staff to educational excellence has remained constant. We invite you and your children to become a part of our enduring legacy of learning.

Jim Hecocks, Principal

We have transformed into an
IB Primary Years Programme School!

On March 14, 2012, Central Elementary became an authorized IB World School!

At an IB World School, each grade level teaches six Units of Inquiry (UOI). Each UOI falls under one of six transdisciplinary themes that students focus on in preschool through 5th grade. All of these UOIs across the grade levels form our school’s Programme of Inquiry. Our Programme of Inquiry “quilt” hangs on the wall across from the main office. Stop in and take a look at the tremendous learning opportunities our students have throughout their seven years at Central Elementary. This quilt keeps our community informed of our students’ learning. You can also view the complete Programme of Inquiry by clicking on the link below this update.

We also have an “IB Action Board” located on the right when you walk through our main entrance. If your child takes his/her learning and translates that learning into action, please honor your child and let us hear from you! There are Action Certificates on the action bulletin board for you to use at any time. Action can be anything from creating a shelter at home using popsicle sticks (Kindergarten’s Shelter UOI) to raising money for those in need of clean water (5th grade’s Water UOI). This has been a very exciting year for us. If you have any questions or concerns or want to find out ways you can be more involved, please contact me.
